A higher authentication of documents intended to be used abroad – Apostille

If your life journey or work commitments have taken you to a foreign country, you will need to start off at Czech authorities where you can obtain an apostille for your important documents that you may need abroad.

What is an apostille?

An apostille is a higher authentication of a document confirming that the document is genuine. A higher authentication (apostille) is a process that involves finding out whether the official stamp and signature on a document are genuine and whether the person who has issued the document in question was authorised to do so. Documents are authenticated by a number of authorities in a manner where a superior authority verifies the authenticity of the stamp and signature of its subordinate authority. Legalisation is needed, for instance, when getting married abroad, granting authority to another person, studying and working abroad and others.

To be able to use official documents abroad, they need to be authenticated. One form of higher authentication is an apostille certificate. The other, more complex form of authentication is Embassy attestation.

Which countries recognise the apostille certificate?

Being the simpler way of legalising documents, the apostille is recognised in countries that have signed the Apostille Convention, also called the Hague Convention. As well as the member states of the European Union, an apostille will also suffice in other European countries such as Norway, Great Britain, Switzerland, Ukraine and Iceland. Authentication by way of an apostille is also accepted in other countries, such as the USA, Turkey, India, Australia, Mexico and others.

How can I obtain an apostille?

Documents are always authenticated to have an apostille certificate added to them by the authorities of the country in which the documents were issued. The apostille authentication process is completed at ministerial level or at the Notarial Chamber of the Czech Republic. An apostille certificate is attached to the original document and subsequently translated into the required language by a court-appointed translator. In practice, this entails a number of time-consuming trips to various institutions.

Thanks to the fact that the higher authentication of documents need not be applied for by the documents’ owner, we can take care of everything for you. We have plenty of experience with the authentication of documents for a variety of countries. This way, you can be sure that the relevant authorities will have everything they need to complete the legalisation of your documents successfully, and that everything will be done correctly.

If you need a document issued by an authority in the Czech Republic (a copy of your criminal record, a registry certificate and any other certificate or statement) and you are currently abroad or cannot obtain the required document in person, all you have to do is send us a power of attorney with your signature verified by a notary public in the Czech Republic, or by an Embassy of the Czech Republic in a foreign country, and we will take care of the rest. We are happy to send you a power of attorney template upon your request.
